- Christian Skoorsmith - Working with Transgender Clients
This conversation with Christian is soul settling. I have many transgender mates and for me I don’t give it alot of thought. The only real label that exists in my mind towards them is “Your my mate!”. However, in saying that their are many therapists that don’t understand the internal world of being transgender.
I’ve heard stories of adversity, triumph, heroism, pain, loss, sadness, and complete euphoria. But as a therapist how do you give the right advice in territory that you are not familiar with? Christian will help with that! and he is VERY down to earth and easy to talk to.
Christian also has first hand experience and a way to help therapists settle into helping more transgender clients. The feeling of security and safety is crucial for everyone that enters your healing space.
What to Know About Working with Transgender Clients?
1. Transgender clients need support.
These people have been judged externally and internally. Then add confusion to the mix and you begin to eliminate the feeling of euphoria. They need support.
2. Remember that gender identity is not the only issue being presented.
The gender alignment process is brief in the course of someone’s life, however the anxiety, depression, judgement, anger, acceptance etc is a much longer journey.
3. You don’t have to be an expert to be compassionate.
Compassion is natural. It’s totally okay if you don’t know the perfect things to say or the right ways to be an ally. This is an opportunity to expand your skills as a healer and affirm yourself to support.
Allow yourself to sit with their narratives and educate you about their world.
